Sewage Backflow Prevention

In order to minimize damage caused by blocked sewer lines, the Town of Pilot Butte Public Works staff regularly inspects , cleans and repairs lines and lift stations. Other backup preventative measures include tree root control and public education.

In the past year, the Town sewer system has experienced an above normal amount of blockages caused by grease and foreign materials. Clogged sewer lines can lead to considerable expense to clean and repair. Preventing sewage blockage is in everyone’s best interest, and preventative maintenance is the best insurance to steer clear of the cost and inconvenience to homes, businesses and the Town.

Drains are often used as trash cans and the sewer system cannot handle chemicals, trash, garbage or fats. Chemicals may harm the environment, and garbage, trash and fats can cause sewer back-ups that are unsanitary, smelly and expensive for the Town and often the homeowner to correct.

Here are some of the things that need to be kept out of the sewer and should be disposed of more responsibly:

  • Chemicals – may be hazardous to the environment. These include motor oil and auto fluids, pesticides, fertilizer and lawn care products, bleach and disinfectants, beauty products, medicine, paint, varnish and paint remover, etc.
  • Paper and Plastic – can block the pipes in your house or in the street.
  • Fats, Oil and Grease – any of these that are poured down the drain can harden into a plug, and block an entire pipe, causing sewer backups for you or your neighbours. Included in this category are meat scraps and bones; vegetable and fruit scraps
  • Garbage – just like trash and fats, clogs and blocks the pipes. Paper towels, dental floss, feminine hygiene products and applicators, cat litter, cigarettes, disposable diapers, rags, dish cloths, and hockey tape are just some of the items that have caused problems.

By following a few simple rules, you can help prevent costly sewer blockages in the future. Thank you for your co-operation and please remember that back flow preventers are available, free of charge, at the Town Office by calling 781-4547.
